On a nondescript Tuesday in July 1997, John Gyngell and Christian Townsley hung the front door to their new bar on New Briggate with 5 minutes to spare before opening time. The walls were still wet with fresh paint as friends and family streamed in, glasses of Red Stripe, Fosters and Kronenbourg thrust into their hands. A solemn vow was made to create the best bar in Leeds. North Bar was born. The atmosphere was electric. Everyone was home by 11.30pm.
20 years, six additional venues and a new brewery later… North Bar continues to be a glowing hub of familiarity to the people of Leeds and visitors to the city, offering great service in a friendly and unpretentious atmosphere and the most comprehensive selection of drinks around. Often referred to as “the first craft beer bar in Britain”, North Bar’s unparralled heritage and long-running success warrant the most jubilant of celebrations and the highest of fives.
